CNN —This piece contains mild spoilers for the Netflix series “Ripley” and a scene in the movie “Civil War.”Are we finally ready to take another look at why we love to hate sociopaths so much? But his rendition of Ripley – highly capable, chameleonic, but never what you’d call charming — represents a refreshing take on one of the most famous sociopaths in literature and film. Gagne feels Hollywood’s nearly always gotten it wrong with portrayals of sociopaths, reducing them to a collection of cartoonish, villainous traits. In fact, I found one of film’s most recent sociopaths to be singularly chilling because of his very plausibility. He’s in Alex Garland’s “Civil War,” the polarizing film about a vaguely-sketched conflict set in the modern-day United States.

Alain Delon in "Purple Noon" (1960)Alain Delon in "Purple Noon." TitanusFive years after Patricia Highsmith's novel "The Talented Mr. Ripley" hit stands — the first of five Ripley novels — we already had the first big-screen adaptation. Marking the first role for legendary French actor Alain Delon, here he plays Ripley as a dashing young man who is tasked with bringing home Philippe Greenleaf. Instead, Ripley becomes Greenleaf. Unlike Matt Damon's portrayal in the role, from the start Delon's Ripley doesn't seem like someone anyone should trust.

CNN —Moving slowly, indeed almost hypnotically, “Ripley” takes a few episodes to kick in, but once it does there’s no turning back. Set in the early 1960s, the format provides the latitude to luxuriate in uncomfortable moments and build palpable tension around situations in Patricia Highsmith’s books, a sensation that becomes more intense once it’s demonstrated how ruthless Scott’s Tom Ripley can be. Living an idyllic life with his girlfriend Marge (Dakota Fanning), Dickie resists the notion but foolishly invites Tom into his orbit. Marge might be suspicious of Tom’s motivations, but he quickly wins over Dickie despite his occasionally strange behavior. If they do, give the credit, primarily, to the talented Messrs. Zaillian and Scott.

One of fiction’s most famous impostors returns on Thursday with the debut of Netflix’s “Ripley,” the latest adaptation of a character invented in the 1950s by the author Patricia Highsmith. Over nearly seven decades, Tom Ripley has appeared in five books by Highsmith, five films, multiple television episodes and even a radio show. He has been played by interpreters as varied as Matt Damon, Alain Delon, Dennis Hopper, John Malkovich and now, Andrew Scott. What makes him fascinating is his willingness to go to murderous lengths to secure it. As a new version of Tom Ripley arrives, here is a look at how this grifter has evolved over the generations.

I HEARD HER CALL MY NAME: A Memoir of Transition, by Lucy Sante“I want to change my sex,” Patricia Highsmith wrote in her diary in 1948. Now comes Lucy Sante with a memoir, “I Heard Her Call My Name,” about transitioning in her late 60s from male to female. Sante worries too about her byline, her newly “dead” one, as if someone had shot it. At one point, she writes, she considered publishing a memoir that began: “This book is by Luc Sante, although it was written by Lucy Sante.” Yet here, happily, is Lucy entire. It is about Ferrell’s cross-country road trip with his best friend of 30 years who is transitioning.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The momentary bliss-fueled blackouts that used to consume T.J. Watt after every big play still come. So maybe it's best to let others — like older brother J.J. Watt — serve as his hype men. Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin called Watt “the best defensive player on the planet” on Tuesday. Pittsburgh safety Minkah Fitzpatrick — himself a three-time All-Pro — laughed when asked if he took Tomlin's praise of Watt personally. “I just want to continue to be the best player I can be for myself and for this team.”___

It’s too desperate, too confused, too pleased with its petty shocks to rile anything you’d recognize as genuine excitement. This thing was written and directed by Emerald Fennell, whose previous movie was “Promising Young Woman,” a horror flick about rape that was also a revenge comedy. These two meet, in earnest, when Oliver loans Felix his bike, a moment Oliver’s been waiting for. When Oliver tells Felix his father’s just died, Felix extends his Saltburn invitation out of sincere compassion. He’s the one nonwhite major character in “Saltburn,” a fact the movie considers doing something intriguing with but abandons.

Cleveland allowed an opponent to score two defensive touchdowns for the first time since Pittsburgh did it on Oct. 16, 1983. The Browns played most of the final three quarters without Chubb, who was carted off the field with what appeared to be his second major left knee injury. The Nuggets were sharp, even after a nine-day wait between their conference-final sweep and the start of the NBA Finals. "I reminded our group, if they didn't know, that Miami went into Milwaukee (in the first round) and won Game 1," Nuggets head coach Michael Malone said. Carly Pifer, founder of online erotica site Aurore, edits erotica stories professionally. It was one of the reasons she started Aurore, an online erotica community where women and LGBTQ+ writers can submit confessional-style true stories. "I want something slow, meandering, I want something that's like a tease…you're not going get straight to sex," Pifer told Insider. "I don't really care what color lipstick you're wearing and like how often as women do we really wear red lips?" Building up to sex is one of the most important parts of erotica, according to Pifer — and of intimacy itself.
Inside these boxes: Approximately $20 million worth of detained solar panels by U.S. Customs & Border Protection over suspected ties to forced labor. Shipments coming directly from China represented about $80 million worth of goods, while Malaysia accounted for $461 million and Vietnam accounted for $370 million. "UFLPA allows us to presume [goods] were produced with forced labor, and therefore they'd be excluded from the United States," said Fox. "The cotton commodity coming out of the Xinjiang region has typically been tied to forced labor," Fox told CNBC. The companies then had 30 days to come back to CBP and prove that the items were produced without forced labor.

Auburn University has blocked TikTok on campus WiFi following a directive by Alabama's governor. One Auburn student told Insider that he'd already deleted the TikTok app because it was distracting him from work. "TikTok has never shared US data with the Chinese government, nor would we if asked," a TikTok spokesperson told Insider. Auburn students say the restrictions could affect their downtime, but professors worry it could have educational impacts, too. Auburn students are able to get around the restrictions by not connecting to the campus WiFi.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection has barred imports from three companies, including a supplier to Western apparel companies, that the agency says could be using North Korean forced labor. China and Russia are home to the majority of North Korean people working abroad, according to the U.S. The U.S. is leading a growing movement by Western governments to preventing goods made with forced labor from reaching store shelves. U.S. lawmakers in both parties are putting pressure on Customs to tackle forced labor, Mr. Conklin said. North Korean workers labor in dozens of countries, with Pyongyang taking between 70% and 90% of their earnings in many instances, the U.S. said in a 2018 publication.
Seven decades ago, Carol Aird and Therese Belivet went on a second date. The film earned six Academy Award nominations and the enduring adoration of queer women the world over, who have dubbed Dec. 21 “Carol Day,” and the holiday season “Carol Season.”One of the best ways to celebrate? ‘Carol’ is that magic for the sapphic community.”Watching “Carol” has also been a holiday tradition for Kaina Dominguez, the founder of The Bush Films, a queer film festival with screenings throughout the year. Queer women-centered site Autostraddle once had a “30 Days of Carol” event, where it posted 30 articles about “Carol” in as many days, and one of its writers also watched “Carol” on a 24-hour endless loop. And then there is ‘Carol,’ braving the tsunamis of ‘business/industry requirements’ and telling the tale of love with sensitivity and honesty.”

Melissa Highsmith was 22 months old when she was allegedly abducted in August 1971 by a babysitter from her family's Fort Worth apartment, according to NBC Dallas-Fort Worth. Sister Victoria Highsmith told NBC Dallas-Fort Worth that the DNA matched samples from Melissa Highsmith's children. Within three weeks, the family had found Melissa Highsmith. "It was like, ‘Boom, boom, boom,’ we found her," Victoria Highsmith said.
Fungal infections are more widespread than doctors or patients realize, research suggests. People generally get fungal infections after breathing in spores. Thompson’s paper came just weeks after another study revealed high rates of fungal disease diagnoses far outside their traditionally understood geographies. A World Health Organization report in October also found that severe fungal infections became more prevalent among people with pre-existing health issues during the Covid pandemic. In some cases, fungal infections can take months of treatment to clear and may become chronic.
